For Immediate Release
Halifax, NS--Nova Scotia’s arts and culture sector received a huge boost last week when it was announced in the speech from the throne that government would double the province’s culture budget over the next three years.
Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council Chair Paul Gallant said today that the announcement is positive news for the province's arts and culture sector.
"The council has worked hard over the past five years advising government on how it can better support arts and culture in the province," said Mr. Gallant. "This announcement shows that government is listening and is committed to ensuring the sustainability and growth of the sector."
The province currently invests more than $8.1 million annually in the culture budget. The recent throne speech commitment will result in a doubling of this budget to more than $16 million by 2010-11.
The increased investment in arts and culture comes on the heels of the province's endorsement of the council's report, "Creative Nova Scotia: How Arts and Culture Can Help Build a Better Nova Scotia". The report highlights the need for increased awareness and support in order for the sector to prosper. It contains ten recommendations -- many of which the province has already begun to address.
"By doubling the budget for arts and culture over the next three years," said Mr. Gallant, "the province is well positioned to respond to the report in a comprehensive way. We look forward to continuing our partnership with government to grow the culture sector with this new investment."
The Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council was established in 2003. In consultation with the arts and culture sector, it provides advice and recommendations to guide the Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage regarding ongoing investment in Nova Scotia's artists, cultural industries and cultural activities.
