Council Meeting News



The Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council meets once per month. The Council meets as a whole, but also works in several sub-committees or task groups to deal with specific items such as communications and program review.


May 25, 2009

  • This meeting was held in conjunction with le Conseil des arts de Chéticamp’s Symposium “Conversations on art in our communities” and the official opening of the La Place des arts Père Anselme-Chiasson in Chéticamp.
  • Council were reminded Minister Dooks had sent a letter to  the Honourable James Moore, Federal Minister of Canadian Heritage, on the recommendation of Council, regarding funding cuts at the CBC, the status of sponsorship funding in sector and the economy as it affects culture.
  • Council moved to request a meeting with the new minster of Tourism, Culture and Heritage at their earliest convenience following the results of the June 9 election and pending cabinet selection.
  • Work is continuing on Creative Nova Scotia 2009 with a keynote speaker selection.  The speaker will be Yvon Gauthier,  chair of Canadian Public Arts Funders (CPAF) and Chair of le Conseil des arts et des lettres in Quebec.

April 23, 2009

  • Council received Larry Haiven from Saint Marys University who provided insight into status of the artist legislation including as it exists in federal and provincial jurisdictions
  • A letter was sent from Council to the Honourable James Flaherty federal Minister of Finance recommending reconsideration of changes to SSHRC-funded scholarships which will eliminate the eligibility of artist/researchers to these grants.
  • A call for new council members was widely distributed April 7, 2009 with a deadline of May 6, 2009 set for applications.

March 23, 2009

  • The NSACPC welcomed the appointment of Devon Strang to Council. Devon was selected from the short list of 2008/09 applicants to fill a vacancy left by departing members in December.
  • Yarmouth was chosen by the Council to be the location of the Fourth Annual Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala and Conference which will be held Saturday, October 24,  2009.
  • Six communities responded to the call for proposals to host the event in Western Nova Scotia.  The recommendation of the site location was made by a committee of representatives from the sector.
  • Council’s Partnerships & Outreach Task Group met with representatives from African Nova Scotia Affairs and Aboriginal Affairs Offices to discuss outreach opportunities with the communities these groups represent.
  • Council members attended Nova Scotia CAN’s Town Tall March 4th meeting to discuss their paper:Building a Creative Economy in Nova Scotia.

February 23, 2009

  • Council met February 23rd following cancellation of the scheduled January meeting due to weather.
  • Council members attended Nova Scotia CAN’s launch of its paper: Building a Creative Economy in Nova Scotia February 18th at the AGNS.
  • The Interdepartmental Working Group on Culture, who’s formation was a recommendation in the NSACPC’s Creative Nova Scotia report, met in January to discuss member departments’ progress implementing the report’s recommendations.
  • A call for proposals which closed February 27th was issued to solicit interest from Western Nova Scotian communities to host the 2009 Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala and Conference.  An RFP was which closes March 20th seeks to select an event manager to coordinate the event.  

November 24, 2008

  • Donald Ferguson tendered his resignation from Council as he no longer works in the culture sector.
  • Council has presented it’s 2007-08 Annual Report to Minister Dooks.
  • Council discussed the third annual Creative Nova Scotia conference and awards gala.

October 24, 2008

  • Marty Burt has been chosen as master of ceremonies for Creative Nova Scotia.
  • Council discussed the success to the “Nocturne at Night”. An advertisement for the Creative Nova Scotia Event had been placed in the Nocturne’s event program.
  • Members were briefed on the final details of the conference and gala to be held on November 1, 2008.

September 22, 2008

  • New members who joined Council this year and attended their first meeting include: Gregor Ash, Paula Davis, Addy Doucette and Steven Naylor.
  • Council hosted “Fall for the Arts” in partnership with the arts and culture community in the province.
  • The March meeting of community arts councils was discussed. Council will invite these councils to the Creative Nova Scotia Conference and Awards Gala and provide a venue for them to meet further.
  • Council recognized a letter from Premier MacDonald to the Prime Minister stating the province’s disappointment in the announced federal cuts to culture spending.
  • Council discussed a letter from Minister Dooks to the Federal Canadian Heritage Minister responsible for arts and culture regarding the federal culture cuts.
  • Council has selected MacDonnell Cultural Productions to manage the Creative Nova Scotia event taking place November 1, 2008.
